Program Description:

Build a Rock Solid CEO/Board Partnership

Based on Chapter 5 of Mr. Westman's book Board & CEO Roles For Achieving Association Goals - Nurture the CEO/Board Working Relationship.

Associations are unique in terms of the continual turnover of board officers and other board directors, and how involved many board members are in the nuts n bolts of running an association. These realities make it imperative for CEOs and other senior executives to develop strong partnerships with board members individually and collectively.

This presentation will identify best practices for building such partnerships, starting well before volunteers ascend into top board leadership positions.

Learning Objectives include:

  • The importance of role definition and how the CEO can build consensus regarding who does what- board officers, various governance entities and staff.
  • The importance of communications and how the CEO can establish a framework for effective interactions with board and its officers.
  • The importance of informal relationship building and how the CEO can utilize processes and specific tools to build working relationships with key member leaders before and after they become the CEO's boss.
